Founded in 1987 by retired TWA Flight Attendants to celebrate the pride and dignity of their chosen profession, Silver Wings numbers approximately 1,000 members throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and Mexico. The BCRF is proud to be their charity of choice.
We are delighted that Silver Wings continues to support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and at the end of 2006, made a contribution of over $19,000. This represented funds the annual mail campaign, the special all-airline luncheon in Phoenix, and the silent auction and raffle on Alaska Cruise.
The careers of members span service aboard a range of aircraft, from the DC-3 to the B-717. Membership increases monthly and is open to former TWA and Ozark Flight Attendants, who are proud to average 30 years of service to TWA.
Silver Wings consider themselves stewards of aviation history, making personal appearances in vintage uniforms and preserving the image of what they believe was a unique moment in time. More importantly, however, the organization is a platform to raise funds for women's health programs, and most of their collective energies go into fund raising.
Each year, the Silver Wings Charity Committee sends a fundraising letter to the membership. Local chapters in every state and overseas hold luncheons and silent and live auctions, with 100% of the proceeds from donated items to benefit BCRF. A special auction is always held at the Silver Wings Convention and Gathering of Friends, held each fall in a variety of cities.
The response to the Charity Committee's fundraising efforts is never disappointing. They wanted to support BCRF's work toward prevention and finding a cure for breast cancer because their membership is predominantly female and some members have been affected by the disease. BCRF was chosen for its dedication to funding research and for directing 85% of funds raised to that purpose.
